A Shopify discount audit checklist should inventory every active promotion, remove stale intent, recalculate margin, map combinations, verify storefront messaging, test boundary carts, review performance and returns, and assign an owner and next review date.
Discount problems accumulate quietly. A code stays active after a campaign ends. A new clearance collection remains eligible for a storewide offer. A cart banner describes an old threshold. Individually, each issue looks small; together, they erode margin and trust.
Run this audit every quarter and before a major sales period.
1. Inventory every Shopify discount and promotion
Export or record every active automatic discount, code, app-based rule, POS promotion, sale-price campaign, free gift, and shipping offer. For each, capture:
- owner and purpose;
- start and end date;
- eligible customers, markets, products, and channels;
- reward and thresholds;
- combination settings; and
- storefront placements.
Shopify currently permits up to 25 active automatic discounts, including app-based offers. A clean inventory makes conflicts easier to spot than scanning the Discounts page one rule at a time.
2. Remove expired intent
A technically active discount may be strategically expired. Pause rules without an owner, current campaign, or measurable purpose. Search theme banners, product descriptions, landing pages, email automations, and support macros for old codes and thresholds.
Do not delete records blindly if finance or customer support needs history. Document what changed and when.
3. Recheck eligible merchandise
Review newly added products, clearance items, gift cards, subscriptions, and products whose costs changed. Confirm that eligible collections still match the written policy.
Mixed-variant products deserve special attention because automated collection conditions can evaluate at product level when a variant matches. Spot-check actual carts rather than trusting the collection preview alone.
4. Recalculate margin at every threshold
For each tier, calculate discounted revenue minus product cost, payment fees, pick-and-pack, and shipping subsidy. Test the first cart that reaches a tier and unusually large carts.
Compare actual results with the original assumption. If shipping or product cost increased, yesterday’s safe threshold may now lose money.
5. Map discount combinations
Shopify applies combinations only when each participating discount permits them. Build a simple matrix showing which product, order, and shipping offers can combine.
Test the important intersections. Shopify’s combination guide explains that product discounts apply before order discounts and documents plan-specific behavior for Buy X get Y products.
6. Match messaging to calculation
Compare announcement bars, product widgets, cart progress messages, checkout banners, offer terms, and support language with the configured rule.
Check words such as “order total,” “subtotal,” “all products,” and “automatically.” Replace vague language with the exact qualifying amount, eligible set, and customer action.
7. Test Shopify discount boundaries and conflicts
For every important promotion, test one cart below, at, and above the threshold. Include:
- eligible and excluded products together;
- multiple variants;
- another permitted code;
- mobile and desktop;
- online and Shopify POS where applicable;
- key markets and currencies; and
- a partial return scenario.
Save expected totals before the test. Screenshots and order numbers create a useful audit trail.
8. Review usage and incrementality
Measure redemption rate, average order value, units per order, gross margin after discount, new-versus-returning customers, and return rate. Compare against a relevant baseline, not the previous promotion if seasonality changed.
A campaign can increase revenue while decreasing contribution. Decide in advance which metric determines whether the rule stays, changes, or ends.
9. Inspect low- and zero-use rules
Zero use can mean weak demand, but it can also signal broken eligibility, hidden messaging, an invalid code, or an offer losing to a better automatic discount. Test before concluding that customers were uninterested.

10. Check returns and customer-service guidance
Review how discounted lines, gifts, and shipping rewards appear in order and refund views. Give support a written policy for partial returns and exceptions. Shopify allows merchants to adjust partial-refund amounts, so staff guidance matters.
11. Assign owners and next review dates
Every active promotion needs an owner, purpose, end condition, and review date. Record the next quarterly audit before closing the current one.
12. Simplify the promotion stack
Remove duplicate rules, consolidate overlapping tiers, and keep storefront messages focused. More promotions do not automatically create more conversion; they often create uncertainty about the final price.
Audit Multiscount campaigns in the same workflow
Multiscount supports volume discounts, free gifts, order goals, shipping discounts, storefront/cart widgets, and a checkout banner displaying available discounts. Include every Multiscount rule and placement in the same audit as Shopify-native discounts so configuration and customer-facing copy stay aligned.
Use the discount performance measurement guide for KPI design and the pre-launch test checklist for deeper QA.
A quarterly audit should end with fewer surprises, clear ownership, and a promotion stack customers can understand.
