An automatic cart total discount gives shoppers a clear reason to add one more item: reach a spending threshold and the reward appears without a code. Used well, it can increase average order value (AOV) while keeping the checkout experience simple.

This guide explains how to plan the offer, create it in Shopify, build a multi-tier version with Multiscount, and test the details that commonly cause discount surprises.

What is an automatic cart total discount?

An automatic cart total discount activates when the cart meets an order-value condition. For example:

  • Spend $75 and save $7.
  • Spend $100 and save 10%.
  • Spend $150 and save 15%.

The shopper does not enter a coupon. Shopify checks eligibility and applies the discount automatically. This removes the “Where is my code?” moment and makes the offer easier to use on mobile or at checkout.

Cart total discounts are different from quantity discounts. A quantity discount rewards buying more units of an eligible product; a cart total discount looks at the order value. They can support the same AOV goal, but they solve different merchandising problems.

Choose the threshold before creating the discount

Start with your current AOV and common product prices. A practical first threshold is high enough to require an additional item but close enough to feel achievable.

Use this simple calculation:

Threshold gap = proposed threshold − current AOV

If your AOV is $68 and common add-ons cost $15 to $25, an $85 or $90 threshold may be more useful than $75. A $75 offer could reward orders that would have happened anyway; a $120 offer may feel too distant.

Then check profitability:

Contribution profit = revenue after discount − product cost − payment fees − fulfillment costs − shipping subsidy

Do not judge the offer by revenue alone. A $100 cart with 10% off produces $90 of net revenue before costs.

How to create an automatic cart total discount on Shopify

For a simple, single-threshold offer, use Shopify’s native automatic discount tools:

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Discounts.
  2. Select Create discount.
  3. Choose Amount off orders.
  4. Select Automatic discount as the method.
  5. Enter a customer-facing title, such as “Spend $100, save 10%.”
  6. Choose a percentage or fixed amount.
  7. Set the minimum purchase requirement to a minimum purchase amount.
  8. Choose customer eligibility, combinations, and active dates.
  9. Save the discount.

Shopify limits the number and behavior of active automatic discounts, and combination rules determine whether product, order, and shipping promotions can run together. Review the current Shopify automatic discount documentation before launch.

Create tiered Shopify cart total discounts with Multiscount

If you want several order goals under one promotion, Multiscount lets you create tiered, automatic discounts based on cart value.

A simple ladder might be:

Cart total Reward Purpose
$75 $5 off Encourage one small add-on
$110 10% off Reward a larger basket
$160 15% off Motivate high-value orders

To configure the campaign:

  1. Open Multiscount in Shopify admin.
  2. Create an order-goal discount.
  3. Add the cart-total condition for the first threshold.
  4. Choose the fixed or percentage reward.
  5. Add the remaining tiers, keeping the rewards easy to compare.
  6. Configure eligibility, dates, and combination behavior.
  7. Enable a storefront widget so shoppers can see their current reward and next goal.
  8. Save and test the campaign before promoting it.

The widget matters because an invisible threshold cannot influence behavior. Use direct copy such as “Add $18 more to save 10%” rather than a vague “Special offer available.”

Percentage or fixed amount: which works better?

A fixed discount is easy to understand and gives you a predictable maximum cost. “Spend $80, save $8” is often effective for a first tier.

A percentage discount becomes more valuable as the cart grows, which can make it more motivating at higher thresholds. It also creates more margin risk because every extra dollar receives the same percentage reduction.

Model both options at the threshold and above it. For a $100 threshold:

  • $10 off costs $10 whether the cart is $100 or $140.
  • 10% off costs $10 at $100 and $14 at $140.

If product margins vary widely, consider exclusions or a fixed reward.

Decide whether other discounts can combine

Combination settings deserve deliberate testing. Shopify can combine eligible product, order, and shipping discounts when each discount permits the combination. The final result depends on discount classes and application order.

Test at least these carts:

  • Threshold discount only.
  • Threshold plus an eligible product promotion.
  • Threshold plus free shipping.
  • Threshold plus a customer or loyalty code.
  • A cart containing excluded, sale, subscription, or gift-card items.

If the combined result breaks your profit floor, disable that combination or reduce one of the rewards.

Test the boundary carts

Before launch, place test orders just below, exactly at, and just above every threshold. For a $100 goal, test $99.99, $100, and $100.01.

Also check:

  • Whether the threshold uses the pre-discount or post-discount subtotal.
  • How taxes and shipping affect the displayed progress.
  • What happens when an item is removed after the reward appears.
  • Whether the discount displays correctly in cart, checkout, and order details.
  • Whether customer, market, and channel restrictions behave as expected.

Repeat the tests on mobile. A correct checkout discount can still underperform if the progress message is hidden or clipped in the cart drawer.

Promote the next action, not just the percentage

The best message tells the shopper what to do and what they receive:

  • “You’re $12 away from $10 off.”
  • “Add one more item to unlock 15% off.”
  • “You unlocked 10% off. Spend $40 more to reach 15%.”

Place the message on product pages and in the cart, where customers can still change their order. Keep site banners consistent with the actual threshold, eligibility, and end date.

Measure whether the offer adds profitable revenue

Compare the campaign period with a meaningful baseline and monitor:

  • AOV and median order value.
  • Conversion rate.
  • Discount cost per order.
  • Contribution profit per order.
  • The percentage of orders landing just above each threshold.
  • Refund and return rates.

An AOV increase is not a win if contribution profit falls. If many orders cross the first tier but few reach the second, change the threshold gap, reward, or recommended add-ons.
