“Buy three items and get a free gift” solves a different problem from “Spend $100 and get a free gift.”
A cart-value goal asks the customer to spend more money. A quantity goal asks them to add another unit. That makes quantity-based gifts useful for consumables, accessories, samples, and products customers naturally buy in multiples.
Here is how to design the offer without letting mixed carts, low-priced products, or unlimited gift quantities undermine the campaign.
Choose the quantity for your Shopify free gift
Before opening Shopify admin, define the count.
Your offer might use:
- total items in the cart;
- quantity of one product;
- combined quantity from a collection;
- quantity of selected variants;
- distinct products rather than total units.
These are not interchangeable. “Buy any three skincare items” should not accidentally count a gift card or unrelated accessory. “Buy three shirts” may or may not allow three units of the same size and color.
Write the rule in one sentence. If the sentence is difficult to explain, simplify the promotion.
Choose a gift that fits the purchase
The gift should be useful to someone buying the qualifying products. A sample, refill, case, tool, or small companion product usually makes more sense than unrelated clearance stock.
Calculate the campaign cost using the gift’s landed cost, picking and packing time, added shipping weight, and expected redemption rate. The retail price can make the reward feel substantial, but it does not tell you what the promotion costs.
Check whether the extra gift could move an order into a more expensive shipping band. A cheap gift can become costly if it increases parcel size or weight.
Use Shopify’s native Buy X get Y for a straightforward offer
For a simple promotion, Shopify’s Buy X get Y discount can use a minimum quantity of qualifying items.
A typical setup is:
- In Shopify admin, go to Discounts and create a Buy X get Y discount.
- Choose an automatic discount or discount code.
- In the customer-buys section, enter the minimum quantity.
- Select the qualifying products or collections.
- In the customer-gets section, set the gift quantity.
- Select the gift product or collection and set the discount to free.
- Set a maximum number of uses per order if the offer should not repeat.
- Review customer eligibility, combinations, dates, and limits.
- Save and test the promotion.
With Shopify’s native Buy X get Y flow, customers generally need to add the reward product to the cart themselves. The discount makes the item free after both the qualifying and reward products are present. Your storefront message should say that plainly and link to the gift.
Create a Shopify free gift based on quantity with Multiscount
Multiscount quantity-based gift tiers support product quantity and line-item quantity conditions, free gifts, multiple tiers, and storefront widgets. This is useful when the campaign needs more than one reward level or when the qualifying count must work with other rules.
For example:
- buy 2 eligible items and get a sample;
- buy 4 and get a travel-size product;
- buy 6 and get a full-size accessory.
To build the offer:
- Open Multiscount in Shopify admin and create a gift promotion.
- Select the products, collections, or variants that should count.
- Choose the relevant quantity condition.
- Set the first threshold and gift.
- Add higher tiers only if each tier remains profitable.
- Limit gift quantities and define allowed combinations.
- Add a product-page or cart widget with the exact next step.
- Save the promotion and test every threshold.
Use the labels in your current Multiscount admin, since interface wording can change over time.
Prevent the cheapest-item loophole
If every item in a broad collection counts equally, customers may qualify by adding the least expensive products. That can be fine when the goal is unit movement, but it can damage margin when the gift cost assumes a higher-value basket.
Possible safeguards include:
- limit qualifying products;
- require a minimum line-item price;
- pair quantity with a cart-value condition;
- exclude clearance products and gift cards;
- create separate offers for product groups with different margins.
Multiscount can combine several conditions, which makes it possible to require both quantity and value when the offer needs both protections.
Make the action obvious
Good widget copy names the count, eligible products, and gift.
Examples:
- Add 1 more eligible refill to get a free travel case.
- Your free sample is unlocked. Add it to your cart.
- Buy any 4 items from the Everyday Collection and get the Mini Kit free.
Avoid vague lines such as “You’re close to a reward.” Tell the shopper exactly what counts and what happens next.
Test quantity changes and edge cases
Before launch, confirm that:
- a cart below the quantity does not qualify;
- the exact quantity unlocks the gift;
- removing an eligible item removes the discount;
- excluded products do not count;
- the gift quantity cannot exceed the intended limit;
- variant changes behave correctly;
- the offer works on mobile and desktop;
- all allowed discount combinations produce the expected price;
- the gift has inventory at each fulfillment location;
- the promotion behaves correctly in intended markets.
Also test whether the customer must add the gift manually. Do not promise automatic addition unless your live storefront does it.
Launch one tier, then learn
Start with one clear quantity goal and one relevant gift. Measure unit count per order, average order value, redemption rate, incremental gross profit, and return rate.
Once the first tier works, Multiscount can help you add more quantity levels and show customers their progress. Install Multiscount to create a quantity-based gift campaign that matches the products your customers already buy together.
