Stacked discounts can make an offer feel generous. They can also make shoppers stop and ask, “What actually applies to my cart?”
The difference is rarely the number of promotions. It is whether the rules, savings, and next step stay clear from the product page to checkout.
This guide explains how to stack discounts on Shopify, which combinations Shopify supports, how the math works, and how to communicate the offer without creating checkout surprises.
What does “stacking discounts” mean on Shopify?
Discount stacking means allowing more than one eligible discount to apply to the same order. Shopify groups discounts into three classes:
- Product discounts reduce the price of specific products or collections.
- Order discounts reduce the cart subtotal.
- Shipping discounts reduce the shipping charge.
A stack might include a volume discount on one product, a percentage off the revised order subtotal, and free shipping. It can include automatic discounts, discount codes, or both—as long as the discounts are eligible and their combination settings are compatible.
Shopify does not simply add every active offer. Each discount must permit the relevant combination, the cart must meet every condition, and plan or checkout restrictions may apply.
Which Shopify discounts can be combined?
Shopify’s current guidance identifies these combination patterns:
- Order discount + free shipping
- Product discount + free shipping
- Product discounts on different products
- Product discount + order discount for eligible stores
- Multiple order discounts for eligible stores
- Multiple product discounts on the same line item on Shopify Plus
All merchants can combine order discounts with free shipping, product discounts with free shipping, and product discounts that apply to separate items. Product-plus-order and order-plus-order combinations require an eligible checkout setup. Stacking multiple product discounts on the same line item requires Shopify Plus.
Two additional rules matter:
- Both discounts need compatible combination settings. Enabling combinations on only one side is not enough.
- Shopify chooses the best eligible result when offers conflict. A shopper might see one promotion replace another rather than both applying.
Shipping discounts cannot stack with other shipping discounts. Products participating in a Buy X Get Y promotion are also ineligible for another product discount.
How Shopify calculates stacked discounts
The calculation order is:
- Product discounts
- Order discounts on the revised subtotal
- Shipping discounts
That sequence affects both the final total and threshold eligibility.
Example: volume savings + order discount + free shipping
Suppose a shopper has this cart:
- Three shirts at $40 each: $120
- Volume promotion: 15% off the shirts
- Welcome offer: 10% off the order
- Free shipping above $100 after product discounts
The calculation is:
- The 15% product discount removes $18, reducing the subtotal to $102.
- The 10% order discount removes $10.20, reducing the subtotal to $91.80.
- The shipping condition is evaluated according to its configured rules. If the threshold uses the discounted product subtotal, the cart still qualified at $102 before the order discount.
The shopper pays $91.80 with free shipping.
Do not advertise this as “25% off.” The effective merchandise discount is 23.5%, because the percentages apply at different stages. Show the actual components instead: “15% volume savings + 10% off your revised subtotal + free shipping when eligible.”
Example: two percentage order discounts
Shopify states that when two percentage-based order discounts combine, both percentages are calculated on the original order subtotal after product discounts. On a $100 eligible subtotal, a 10% order discount and a 20% order discount remove $10 and $20, leaving $70.
Test the exact promotion in your store rather than assuming all discount types compound in the same way.
A practical way to design a clear discount stack
1. Give every promotion one job
Start with the customer behavior you want:
- A product or volume discount encourages shoppers to add more units.
- An order discount encourages a larger basket or first purchase.
- A shipping discount removes delivery friction.
If two offers do the same job, the stack becomes harder to explain and may discount more than necessary. A simple ladder—buy more, reach a cart goal, unlock shipping—is easier to understand.
2. Map the discount classes before creating anything
Write down each promotion’s class, trigger, reward, audience, and intended combinations.
| Promotion | Class | Trigger | Reward | Combines with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy 3+ shirts | Product | Quantity ≥ 3 | 15% off shirts | Order, shipping |
| Welcome offer | Order | First order + code | 10% off order | Product, shipping |
| Shipping goal | Shipping | Eligible subtotal ≥ $100 | Free shipping | Product, order |
This catches conflicts before customers do. It also gives support staff a concise source of truth.
3. Configure combinations in both discounts
For Shopify-admin discounts:
- Go to Shopify admin → Discounts.
- Open the first discount.
- In Combinations, select the discount classes it can combine with.
- Save.
- Open the second discount and enable the reciprocal combination.
- Repeat for each intended pair.
You can filter the Discounts page by Combines with to audit active promotions. App-created discounts depend on the app’s support for Shopify’s combination rules.
4. Put the most important rule next to the offer
Do not hide the qualifying condition in a policy page. State it where the shopper makes the decision:
- Product page: “Buy 3, save 15% automatically.”
- Cart: “You’re $18 away from free shipping.”
- Promotion banner: “WELCOME10 stacks with volume savings.”
- Checkout: identify each applied saving with a recognizable label.
Use plain language. “Eligible items” is only useful if the shopper can easily see which items are eligible.
5. Prefer automatic progress over code collecting
Every code adds a memory task. If a promotion is meant for everyone, automatic application is usually clearer. Reserve codes for offers that need attribution or audience control, such as creator campaigns, customer segments, or one-time recovery offers.
If shoppers must enter a code, show:
- The exact code
- What it does
- The minimum spend or quantity
- Whether it combines with the advertised automatic offer
- The expiry date and major exclusions
6. Set guardrails for margin and abuse
Before launch, model the deepest valid stack. Include discounted product cost, order-level savings, shipping subsidy, payment fees, returns, and loyalty rewards.
Useful controls include:
- Minimum quantities or subtotals
- Maximum uses per order or customer
- Customer segment eligibility
- Excluded products or collections
- Start and end dates
- A deliberate choice about subscriptions and sale items
The most generous-looking stack is not helpful if it creates unprofitable orders or conflicting expectations.
How to explain stacked discounts without overwhelming shoppers
Use a three-layer message:
Layer 1: the headline
Lead with the main benefit:
Buy more, save more—and unlock free shipping at $100.
Layer 2: the next action
Show only what the shopper needs now:
Add one more shirt to unlock 15% off.
You’re $12 away from free shipping.
Layer 3: the details
Keep conditions available without putting a paragraph in the banner:
Volume savings apply automatically to eligible shirts. WELCOME10 can be used on a first order and combines with this offer. Free shipping applies when the eligible threshold is met. Exclusions apply.
Keep the terminology consistent across the product page, cart, checkout, confirmation email, and support macros. Switching between “bundle deal,” “quantity break,” and “tiered discount” for the same promotion makes customers wonder whether they are different offers.
Test the full journey before launch
Shopify recommends testing combinations by taking a cart through checkout and reviewing the discounts before payment. Build a small test matrix rather than checking only the ideal cart.
Test at least:
- Just below, exactly at, and just above each threshold
- Eligible and excluded products in the same cart
- Signed-in and guest customers when eligibility differs
- Automatic discount alone
- Discount code alone
- Every intended combination
- A conflicting or expired code
- Mobile and desktop storefronts
- Online Store and any other supported sales channel you use
- Refund and return scenarios that can drop the retained order below a threshold
For each case, verify the product page promise, cart message, checkout labels, savings math, shipping result, and error message.
Shopify currently allows up to 25 active automatic discounts. Customers can use up to five product or order discount codes plus one shipping discount code per order. More available slots do not mean you should expose shoppers to that many simultaneous choices.
Common discount-stacking mistakes
Promising that “all discounts stack”
That phrase is usually too broad. Plan restrictions, exclusions, Buy X Get Y behavior, and app settings can change the result. Name the promotions that combine.
Using vague discount names
Internal names such as Campaign 4 do not help at checkout. Use labels customers can recognize, such as 3+ Shirts: 15% Off or Welcome: 10% Off.
Showing a threshold without saying how it is measured
Clarify whether a free-shipping or order threshold is based on the cart before or after product discounts, and whether taxes or shipping count. Then make your cart progress message follow the same rule.
Letting promotion messages disagree
If the announcement bar says “20% off” but the cart explains only a tiered offer, the customer will assume something failed. Maintain one promotion brief and reuse its wording across touchpoints.
Skipping failure-state copy
When a code cannot combine, Shopify can show that it could not be used with existing discounts. Reduce frustration by explaining exclusions before checkout and training support to identify the conflicting automatic promotion.
A simple stack to start with
For many stores, a clear first stack is:
- An automatic product or volume discount tied to quantity
- One targeted order code for a defined audience
- A free-shipping threshold
Each component has a different purpose, and the shopper can understand the sequence. Launch it to a controlled audience, review margin and conversion data, and expand only when another promotion has a distinct job.

Frequently asked questions
Can customers use an automatic discount and a discount code together on Shopify?
Yes, when both discounts are eligible and configured to combine with each other’s discount class. If they conflict, Shopify applies the best eligible discount or combination.
Can customers enter multiple Shopify discount codes?
Yes. Shopify currently permits up to five product or order discount codes and one shipping discount code per order, subject to eligibility and combination settings.
Can two product discounts apply to the same item?
Multiple product discounts on the same line item require Shopify Plus and compatible configuration. On other plans, design product promotions for different items or combine a product discount with an eligible order discount.
In what order does Shopify apply stacked discounts?
Product discounts apply first, order discounts apply to the revised subtotal, and shipping discounts apply last.
Why did Shopify replace one discount with another?
The discounts may not be configured to combine, the cart may not satisfy both sets of conditions, or the discount types may conflict. Shopify then chooses the best eligible result for the customer.
