Shopify does not provide a native maximum discount amount for one percentage-based order discount. Usage limits cap redemptions, not dollars saved per order. To cap exposure, replace the percentage with a fixed reward, use fixed-value spend tiers, or narrow eligible products.
“15% off” feels predictable on a $100 cart. On a $2,000 cart, the same offer costs $300. Merchants often discover that exposure only after a high-value order arrives.
Shopify’s standard amount-off setup includes total-use and one-use-per-customer controls. Those limits govern how often a code is used, not a maximum dollar saving on one percentage-discounted order. The current amount-off discount settings list percentage or fixed value, minimum requirements, eligibility, dates, usage limits, and combinations—but not a native percentage-discount dollar cap.
You can still control risk with a better offer structure.
Calculate exposure before choosing the mechanic
Use this simple model:
discount cost = eligible subtotal × discount rate
Then test ordinary, high, and extreme carts. At 15%:
- $100 eligible subtotal costs $15;
- $500 costs $75;
- $2,000 costs $300.
Compare each result with contribution margin after product cost, payment fees, pick-and-pack, and any shipping subsidy. The largest plausible cart—not average order value—reveals the downside.
Option 1: Replace the percentage with a fixed reward
If the headline promise is “save up to $50,” a fixed $50 reward above a profitable threshold gives you a true ceiling. Shopify applies fixed order discounts proportionally across eligible cart items and never reduces the order below zero.
The tradeoff is psychological: $50 can feel weaker than 15% on a large cart. Show the threshold and saving together—“Spend $300, save $50”—so customers can evaluate the offer immediately.
Option 2: Use spend tiers with fixed rewards
Tiers can preserve momentum without unlimited exposure:
- Spend $100, save $10
- Spend $200, save $25
- Spend $350, save $50
The top tier becomes the effective cap. Check the net revenue at every boundary and immediately above it. A customer at $351 should not create a worse contribution result than a customer at $349.
If you sell in multiple currencies, remember that Shopify creates fixed discounts in the store currency and converts them at checkout. Review discount behavior across Markets before advertising local-currency values.
Option 3: Narrow the eligible merchandise
Cap exposure indirectly by keeping gift cards, already-discounted items, and fragile-margin products outside the eligible set. Scope the promotion to selected products or a maintained collection instead of “all products.”
This method works best when the offer’s terms are concise. If customers need a spreadsheet to predict eligibility, simplify the promotion.
Option 4: Use quantity or gift rewards
A quantity tier can reward a desired behavior while limiting which units qualify. A free gift also has a known landed cost, even when the customer’s perceived value is higher.
Do not call a gift “free” without accounting for product cost, pick labor, packaging, and additional shipping weight. A controlled reward is only controlled when fulfillment costs are included.
Shopify maximum discount amount vs usage limits
Three settings answer different questions:
- Total usage limit: How many redemptions can occur across customers?
- One use per customer: How often can the same identified customer redeem?
- Maximum discount amount: How many dollars can one order receive?
The first two do not create the third. Likewise, Shopify’s limit on active automatic discounts is a platform-count limit, not a financial cap. See the automatic discount limit guide for campaign-planning implications.
Test your Shopify discount cap on large carts
Before launch, test:
- just below, at, and above every threshold;
- an unusually large eligible cart;
- mixed eligible and excluded products;
- permitted discount combinations;
- multiple currencies and markets;
- partial returns; and
- storefront copy against the checkout result.
For combination planning, Shopify currently allows up to five product or order discount codes plus one shipping code on an order, subject to both discounts’ combination settings.
Use Multiscount for controlled tiers
Multiscount supports tiered volume discounts, free gifts, order goals, and shipping discounts. Its product and cart widgets can advertise the next available reward. That makes it useful when you replace open-ended percentage exposure with explicit, margin-tested tiers.
Choose the cap first, then the customer-facing mechanic. A clear $50 top reward is better than a dramatic percentage that creates unpredictable losses.
