Most free-shipping offers use a spending threshold. But for products with predictable size and weight, item count can be the more useful trigger.
“Buy four and get free shipping” is easy to understand, especially for refills, packs, stationery, beauty products, and other repeat-purchase items. The risk is that four light products and four bulky products can have very different fulfillment costs.
This guide shows how to set a quantity-based shipping reward without treating every cart as if it costs the same to ship.
When to use a quantity-based Shopify shipping discount
A quantity threshold fits when:
- customers commonly buy several units;
- product dimensions and weights are similar;
- each added item contributes enough margin;
- the next quantity is easier to explain than the next spending amount;
- the campaign aims to increase units per transaction.
A value threshold may be safer when your catalog ranges from small accessories to heavy equipment. If product mix changes shipping costs sharply, count alone is a weak predictor of profitability.
Calculate the threshold from contribution margin
Do not choose “four items” because it sounds neat. Estimate what the fourth unit contributes after product cost, payment fees, picking, packing, and expected returns. Compare that amount with the shipping discount you plan to fund.
For a simple check:
- Estimate contribution margin per qualifying unit.
- Multiply it by the required quantity.
- Subtract the expected shipping subsidy.
- Include any packaging step-up or carrier surcharge.
- Compare the result with a typical order without the promotion.
Run the calculation for the lowest-margin eligible product combination, not only the average cart. The least profitable valid cart reveals whether the rule is safe.
Define which items count
The promotion can count every cart item, but that is rarely the best default.
Consider limiting the rule to:
- one product;
- selected variants;
- a collection with similar fulfillment costs;
- products shipped from the same location;
- items available to the same markets;
- products below a chosen weight or price range.
Exclude gift cards, digital products, service products, and any item that should not help unlock a physical shipping reward.
Set up free shipping by item count with Multiscount
Multiscount shipping discounts support shipping discounts and conditions including item count and line-item quantity. It can also combine more than one condition, so you can protect the offer with a value or product rule.
A typical workflow is:
- Open Multiscount in Shopify admin and create a shipping discount.
- Select the eligible shipping reward, such as free shipping or a reduced shipping charge.
- Add an item-count or line-item quantity condition.
- Enter the qualifying quantity.
- Limit the products, collections, customers, markets, or dates where needed.
- Add a second condition if quantity alone does not protect margin.
- Set the discount-combination behavior.
- Add a customizable storefront widget that shows progress.
- Save and test the live cart and checkout.
Check the field names in your current version of the app before documenting the setup for staff.
Combine quantity with a second safeguard
Some campaigns need two gates.
Examples:
- buy 4 eligible items and spend at least $80;
- buy 3 refill packs, excluding oversized products;
- buy 5 units and select standard shipping;
- buy 6 items in a named collection for discounted shipping.
The shopper should be able to understand both conditions. If the rule needs several exceptions, narrow the eligible catalog or use a simpler offer.
Show progress before checkout
Customers cannot respond to an offer they discover after they finish shopping. Place the quantity goal near the add-to-cart action and in the cart.
Useful messages include:
- Add 1 more eligible item to unlock free standard shipping.
- Free standard shipping unlocked for this cart.
- Buy any 4 Everyday Refills and shipping is on us.
If only certain shipping methods or markets qualify, include that limitation near the message rather than hiding it in a footer.
Test shipping rates, not only the discount badge
Shipping logic depends on the destination, delivery option, profile, location, weight, and other store settings. A correct-looking cart message is not proof that checkout is correct.
Test:
- one item below the threshold;
- the exact qualifying quantity;
- a quantity above the threshold;
- mixed eligible and excluded products;
- the heaviest valid product combination;
- multiple shipping zones and markets;
- standard and expedited delivery;
- split fulfillment when relevant;
- accelerated checkout;
- allowed product and order discounts;
- removal of an item after the reward is unlocked.
Confirm both the customer price and the rate label. “Free shipping” should not silently apply to an expensive expedited option unless that is intentional.
Review the campaign by product mix
Track more than redemption rate. Review:
- units per order;
- average order value;
- gross margin after shipping subsidy;
- shipping cost by zone;
- percentage of orders using expedited service;
- product combinations that qualify;
- returns and exchanges;
- conversion rate at the cart and checkout.
If the campaign attracts the least profitable product mix, tighten eligibility or add a value condition.
Turn item count into a clear goal
A quantity-based shipping discount works when the economics and the customer message use the same definition of an eligible item.
