A free gift can give shoppers a concrete reason to add one more item to their cart. Instead of discounting every product, you reward customers only after they reach a spending threshold—for example, a free travel-size product on orders of $75 or more.

To offer a free gift with purchase on Shopify based on cart value, merchants can use Shopify's native Buy X get Y discount or use an app such as Multiscount when they need multiple gift tiers, richer conditions, or storefront messaging. This guide explains both approaches, the limitations to plan for, and a practical way to choose a profitable threshold.

What is a Shopify cart-value free gift with purchase?

A cart-value free gift promotion gives an eligible product a 100% discount after the qualifying merchandise in the cart reaches a set amount.

For example:

  • Spend $75 and get a free travel-size cleanser.
  • Spend $120 and get a free tote bag.
  • Spend $200 and get a free premium accessory.

When the gift product is in the cart, it appears as a separate line item with its price discounted to zero. That keeps the offer visible and makes the value of the reward easy to understand.

This is different from applying an order discount. A 10% order discount reduces revenue across the basket; a gift has a known unit cost and can feel more valuable than it costs you to fulfill.

Why use a free gift instead of another percentage discount?

Free gifts can support several goals at once:

  • Increase average order value: A visible threshold gives shoppers a target to reach.
  • Protect margin: Your cost is based on the gift's landed cost, not its retail price.
  • Introduce a product: Samples and trial sizes can encourage a future full-size purchase.
  • Move selected inventory: A relevant, well-stocked item can become a useful incentive.
  • Make a campaign memorable: A named gift can be more tangible than a small percentage off.

The offer still needs sound economics. A gift that is expensive to source, heavy to ship, or unrelated to the order can erase the value of the additional spend.

Choose a profitable free-gift threshold

Start with your current average order value (AOV), gross margin, and the gift's fully landed cost. A simple first test is to place the threshold roughly 15% to 30% above your recent AOV—close enough to feel attainable, but high enough to require a meaningful cart addition.

Suppose your store has:

  • AOV: $62
  • Gross margin: 60%
  • Proposed threshold: $75
  • Gift landed cost: $4
  • Extra pick-and-pack cost: $1

A customer who moves from $62 to $75 adds $13 in revenue. At a 60% gross margin, that produces $7.80 in gross profit before the reward. After the $5 gift and handling cost, the order still contributes about $2.80 more gross profit than the original basket, before other variable costs.

Use your actual costs rather than copying another store's threshold. Also account for:

  • additional shipping weight or package size;
  • payment fees on the larger order;
  • discounts that can combine with the gift;
  • returns and whether the gift must be returned;
  • tax treatment in the markets where you sell.

If the math is too tight, raise the threshold, choose a lower-cost gift, or restrict the qualifying products.

Method 1: Set up a free gift with Shopify's native Buy X get Y discount

Shopify's built-in Buy X get Y discount supports a minimum purchase amount and can make a selected product free. It is a practical option for one straightforward gift threshold.

Step 1: Prepare the gift product

Create or choose the product customers will receive. Give it a clear title and image, assign inventory to the relevant locations, and publish it to the Online Store sales channel if customers need to add it from the storefront.

Do not set the product's regular price to $0. Keeping its normal price lets the discount show the gift's value and prevents shoppers from ordering it free outside the promotion.

Step 2: Create an automatic Buy X get Y discount

In Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Discounts and select Create discount.
  2. Choose Buy X get Y.
  3. Under Method, select Automatic discount.
  4. Enter a customer-facing title, such as Free gift on orders $75+.
  5. Under Customer buys, select Minimum purchase amount and enter your threshold.
  6. Choose the products or collections that count toward the threshold.
  7. Under Customer gets, set the quantity to 1, select the gift product or collection, and choose Free.
  8. Set the maximum uses per order to 1 unless the campaign intentionally awards multiple gifts.
  9. Review customer eligibility, discount combinations, start date, and end date.
  10. Save the discount.

Shopify calculates a Buy X get Y minimum purchase from eligible product prices. Shipping and taxes do not count. Products that already receive a combinable product discount might not count toward the threshold, so test every combination you allow. Shopify documents these rules in its Buy X get Y discount guidance and discount-combination guidance.

Step 3: Make the customer add the gift

This is the most important limitation of the native method: Shopify does not automatically add the “get Y” item. The shopper must place both the qualifying items and the gift product in the cart. Once the conditions are met, the gift discount applies automatically, as explained in Shopify's Buy X get Y documentation.

Your storefront message should therefore say exactly what to do. For example:

Spend $75 and add the Travel Cleanser to your cart. It becomes free automatically.

Link the message directly to the gift product or a gift collection. Avoid copy such as “Your gift will be added automatically” unless your actual setup does that.

Method 2: Build a tiered free-gift offer with Multiscount

Shopify's native setup is intentionally simple. A discount app is useful when the campaign needs several cart-value tiers, more conditions, or clearer promotion widgets.

Multiscount supports tiered free-gift campaigns and order goals built with Shopify Functions. It can create gift tiers and advertise available rewards on product and cart pages, while applying eligible discounts through Shopify's native discount system without creating draft orders.

A typical tiered campaign might look like this:

  • $75 cart value: free travel-size cleanser.
  • $125 cart value: free cleanser plus cosmetic pouch.
  • $200 cart value: free premium set.

To build the offer in Multiscount:

  1. Install Multiscount: Tiered Discounts from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Open Multiscount in Shopify admin and create a gift or order-goal promotion.
  3. Set the qualifying cart-value condition for the first tier.
  4. Select the gift product and set the gift discount to 100%.
  5. Add more tiers only when each higher level supports your margin target.
  6. Limit the gift quantity per order and configure eligible products, customers, markets, dates, and discount combinations.
  7. Add and customize the storefront widget so shoppers can see the goal and unlocked reward.
  8. Save the promotion and test it on the storefront and at checkout.

Use the labels shown in your current Multiscount admin; interface wording can change as the app evolves. If your desired rule combines unusual product, customer, or market conditions, contact Nextools support before launching.

Promote the threshold throughout the shopping journey

A free-gift offer cannot increase cart value if customers discover it only at checkout. Repeat the same concise message in the places where purchase decisions happen:

  • announcement bar;
  • product-page offer block;
  • cart drawer or cart page;
  • progress bar or goal widget;
  • promotional email and social posts;
  • checkout messaging where your Shopify plan and setup support it.

Good message: You're $12 away from a free travel-size cleanser.

Weak message: Special gift available on qualifying purchases.

The first message names the remaining spend and the reward. It tells the shopper what happens next.

Keep the threshold, gift name, eligibility, and campaign dates consistent everywhere. If the gift must be added manually, say so beside the offer.

Test the free gift before launch

Run test carts on mobile and desktop. At minimum, verify:

  • a cart just below the threshold does not qualify;
  • a cart exactly at the threshold qualifies;
  • a cart above the threshold qualifies;
  • removing an item and dropping below the threshold removes the discount;
  • the maximum gift quantity cannot be exceeded;
  • allowed discount combinations behave as expected;
  • excluded products do not count toward the threshold;
  • the gift has inventory at the location fulfilling the order;
  • the offer works in each intended market and currency;
  • accelerated checkouts follow the expected flow;
  • the gift and discount appear correctly in the order record.

Shopify notes that an out-of-stock gift cannot be claimed. Set a low-stock alert and prepare a replacement or an end date before inventory runs out.

Common free-gift mistakes to avoid

Hiding the manual-add requirement

With Shopify's native Buy X get Y promotion, customers must add the gift themselves. Make the instruction and product link obvious.

Counting shipping or tax toward the threshold

Shopify's native minimum purchase amount is based on qualifying product prices, not shipping or taxes. Describe the offer as a merchandise subtotal threshold.

Forgetting discount combinations

A product discount can change whether an item counts toward a native Buy X get Y minimum. Review how Shopify discount combinations work, decide which discounts may combine, then test them together rather than one at a time.

Giving away more than one unit

Set a maximum of one gift per order unless the campaign is deliberately repeatable. Test quantity changes in the cart.

Choosing an irrelevant gift

The best gift complements the products that helped unlock it. A useful sample or accessory reinforces the purchase; a random clearance item can make the offer feel cheap.

Launching without inventory ownership

Assign someone to monitor stock and campaign performance. A promotion that promises a sold-out reward creates support tickets and abandoned carts.

Measure whether the promotion works

Compare the campaign period with a similar baseline and track:

  • AOV;
  • conversion rate;
  • percentage of orders that reach the threshold;
  • incremental gross profit after gift, handling, and shipping costs;
  • gift redemption rate;
  • return and cancellation rate;
  • repeat purchase rate for shoppers who received the gift.

Do not judge the campaign on AOV alone. If AOV rises but conversion or contribution margin falls, the threshold, reward, or storefront message needs adjustment.

Shopify free-gift FAQ

Does Shopify automatically add a free gift?

Not with Shopify's native Buy X get Y discount. The customer must add the eligible gift product to the cart, then Shopify discounts it when the purchase conditions are met. State that step beside the offer and link directly to the gift. An app may provide a different customer flow, so test your exact theme and configuration before promising automatic addition.

Do shipping and tax count toward the threshold?

No. For a native Buy X get Y minimum purchase amount, Shopify uses the price of eligible products. Shipping and taxes do not count. Describe the requirement as a qualifying merchandise subtotal, especially if your store offers paid shipping or sells in markets with tax-inclusive pricing.

Can a free gift combine with other discounts?

It can if you enable compatible combinations, but the result depends on the discount classes and eligible products involved. A combinable product discount may affect which product prices count toward the Buy X get Y threshold. Test the gift with every automatic discount and discount code customers can use during the campaign.

What happens when the gift is out of stock?

Customers cannot claim an out-of-stock gift. Track inventory at every fulfillment location used by the campaign, set a low-stock alert, and prepare a replacement gift or a clear campaign end. Remove or update storefront messaging immediately if the reward becomes unavailable.

Start with one clear reward, then add tiers

For a first campaign, choose one relevant gift, one achievable threshold, and one unambiguous message. Validate the economics and customer experience before adding more complexity.

If you want to run multiple cart-value gift tiers and show shoppers their progress, install Multiscount on Shopify. You can create free-gift and order-goal promotions, add storefront widgets, and manage advanced discount conditions from one app.
